If Puerto Vallarta is an international destination today, we owe much of it to a Hollywood romance. In 1963, while The Night of the Iguana<\/em> was being filmed in nearby Mismaloya, Richard Burton arrived in this fishing village accompanied by Elizabeth Taylor. What happened next turned a hillside neighborhood above Downtown into legend.<\/p>\n

Casa Kimberly and the Bridge of Love<\/h2>\n

In February 1964, Burton bought Casa Kimberly<\/strong> as a gift for Taylor\u2019s 32nd birthday. Later, they purchased the house across the street and connected the two with a private bridge over the road\u2014the Bridge of Love<\/strong>, a replica of Venice\u2019s Bridge of Sighs\u2014which still stands today. Today, Casa Kimberly is a boutique hotel that preserves the memory of that romance.<\/p>\n

Writers, filmmakers, and American creatives followed the couple and settled in the same cliffside area. Hence the neighborhood\u2019s affectionate and irreverent nickname: Gringo Gulch<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What Gringo Gulch is like today<\/h2>\n

Perched on the hillside just above Downtown and the Malec\u00f3n, Gringo Gulch retains cobblestone streets, character-filled homes, and privileged views of the city and the bay. It is not the city\u2019s most expensive neighborhood per m\u00b2, but it is one of the most sought-after for its history, location, and personality\u2014something no new development can manufacture.<\/p>\n
